Community Garden

The community garden at Leopold Community & Learning Centre is progressing well and is already beginning to provide benefits for members. The garden has moved from establishment into early production, with seedlings growing strongly and a small amount of produce now being harvested by participants. In September the garden had a harvest of Kale, Brussel sprouts, spring onion, snow peas and beetroot to name a few!

Progress to Date

Under Wayne’s leadership, the wicking beds have been successfully established. The beds have been filled with a specialised potting mix, creating a strong foundation for healthy plant growth. The seedlings planted in the beds are growing well, indicating that the garden is settling in successfully and that the growing conditions are supporting early development.

Key Achievements

  • Wicking beds have been established and filled with suitable growing mix.
  • Seedlings are growing well across the garden beds.
  • Members have begun harvesting produce.
  • A netting system has been created to help protect the garden from birds.
  • The project continues to build member involvement and shared ownership of the garden.

Benefits for Members and the Centre

The garden is becoming a welcoming and practical shared space where members can connect, learn, and contribute. As the plants continue to mature, the garden has the potential to provide more fresh produce, encourage sustainable gardening practices, and strengthen community participation at the Centre.

Next Steps

  • Continue monitoring seedling growth and watering needs.
  • Maintain the netting system to ensure crops remain protected from birds.
  • Encourage members to take part in planting, harvesting, and general care of the garden.
  • Record future harvests and garden milestones to demonstrate ongoing progress.

Plan for seasonal planting as current crops are harvested.
